Is a VPN legal in Israel? Yes. No Israeli law restricts VPNs. What has changed since 2024 is that Israel now blocks some foreign news sites. The law known as the Al Jazeera Law, first passed in April 2024, lets the prime minister and communications minister shut foreign broadcasters deemed a threat to state security. In January 2026 the government ordered the websites and YouTube channels of Al Jazeera and Al Mayadeen blocked for 90 days, Middle East Eye reported.

Is a VPN Legal in Israel? The Short Answer

The Al Jazeera Law targets outlets and carriers. Orders under it bar broadcasters, internet companies and YouTube from serving the network inside Israel, Al Jazeera reported. We found no provision penalising viewers.
It now runs to the end of 2027. In December 2025 the Knesset extended it under a temporary provision valid until 31 December 2027, usable even without a state of emergency, Daily Sabah reported.

A court upheld the first ban. In 2024 the Tel Aviv District Court approved the Al Jazeera ban under the temporary law, The Times of Israel reported. Civil liberties lawyers at the Association for Civil Rights in Israel called the permanent version unprecedented in its harm to press freedom.
Its 2025 version reduces judicial oversight, Al Jazeera reported, and applies even when no national emergency has been declared. Israel fell from 101st to 112th in Reporters Without Borders’ 2025 press freedom index, Daily Sabah noted.
Is a VPN Legal in Israel for Reaching Blocked News?
The law does not address viewers. Its powers concern broadcasting, offices, equipment and the companies that carry a network, according to the reporting we reviewed.
Political pressure is another matter. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir urged the public to report people watching Al Jazeera to the police, The New Arab reported. That was a call, not a law.
