NordVPN Port Forwarding (2026): Not Offered, Here Is What to Use Instead

Disclosure: VPNFin is reader-supported. If you buy a VPN through links on this page, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This never affects our ratings — here’s our full disclosure.

NordVPN port forwarding is not available, according to Comparitech, VPNAlert, Gizmodo and Earthsims. One source, Security.org, lists it as supported. We side with the majority, because we found no NordVPN setting or support article that enables it. This guide explains what that means and what to use instead.

What Port Forwarding Does

Port forwarding lets outside devices start a connection to you through the VPN. It helps torrent seeding, some game hosting and reaching a home server from outside. Without it, you can still download and play, but fewer peers can reach you. Our page on CyberGhost port forwarding covers why it is missing and how to torrent without it.

Our port forwarding guide explains the mechanics.

NordVPN port forwarding: what four sources say

NordVPN Port Forwarding: The Evidence

Comparitech states that NordVPN does not allow port forwarding. VPNAlert and Gizmodo list it among NordVPN’s drawbacks, and Earthsims names Proton VPN as the option for users who need it. Security.org’s torrenting list is the exception and says NordVPN allows it.

For torrenting without it, NordVPN still offers P2P servers and two kill switches, as our NordVPN torrenting guide shows.

Alternatives That Offer It

Proton VPN offers port forwarding, according to Gizmodo and Earthsims, and our Proton VPN review covers it. Private Internet Access offers it too, VPNAlert notes; see our Private Internet Access review.

Our torrenting VPN guide compares the options.

NordVPN port forwarding alternatives: providers that offer it

Do You Need NordVPN Port Forwarding?

Most users do not need it, in our view. Streaming, browsing and ordinary downloads work without port forwarding. It matters for heavy seeders, people hosting game servers and anyone who needs to reach a home device from outside.

For remote access to your own devices, NordVPN’s Meshnet links your devices in a private network, as our NordVPN gaming guide describes. That is not port forwarding, but it covers some of the same needs. NordVPN belongs to Nord Security, which also owns Surfshark.

Without NordVPN port forwarding, a kill switch still protects torrent traffic, as our NordVPN kill switch guide explains. For console hosting, our NordVPN Xbox guide covers the routes.

Router users can forward ports on the router itself, but that applies to the home connection, not the VPN; our NordVPN router guide covers VPN routers. Our gaming VPN guide explains hosting needs.

If NordVPN fits otherwise, test it within the refund window, as our refund guide explains. Our NordVPN review covers the rest of the service.

Meshnet as a Partial Workaround

Meshnet is NordVPN’s free private network between your own devices. It does not open ports to the internet. But it covers one common reason people want port forwarding: reaching a device at home from outside. NordVPN’s Android release notes say that routing through a linked computer can give access to its local network, if that computer allows it.

That means a NAS, printer or media server behind a home PC can be reached without forwarding a port. Our NordVPN Meshnet guide explains the setup.

Gaming Without Port Forwarding

Most online games work without inbound ports when you join someone else’s lobby. Hosting a server or peer-to-peer lobbies are where open ports help. If you host, a VPN without port forwarding may limit who can join. Turn the VPN off for hosting sessions or use Meshnet for private games with friends. Our NordVPN gaming guide covers ping and DDoS protection.

Router Port Forwarding Is Different

Your home router can forward ports on your normal connection. Many games and apps use UPnP to do it automatically. That opens ports on your real address, not on the VPN. It does not give the benefits of VPN port forwarding, and it exposes the forwarded device directly to the internet.

If you need open ports and privacy at the same time, choose a provider with VPN port forwarding rather than mixing router rules with NordVPN.

How to Tell Whether You Need It

Watch your torrent client: if downloads complete normally and you can seed to some peers, you can manage without port forwarding. If you seed heavily, run a private tracker with ratio rules, or host a service others connect to, you will notice its absence. In that case, Proton VPN and Private Internet Access are the providers the sources we read point to.

If You Decide You Need It

If port forwarding is essential, compare NordVPN directly with the providers that offer it. Our NordVPN vs Private Internet Access and NordVPN vs Proton VPN pages cover the differences in features, audits and price.

Test the alternative with your actual torrent client or server during its refund window. Check that the forwarded port appears as open from outside before cancelling NordVPN.

Casual users can skip all of this: browsing, streaming and ordinary downloads work fine without inbound ports on NordVPN. Only seeders and hosts need to go further. Our guide to NordVPN SOCKS5 covers fast proxy for one app, no encryption.

How We Research

This page draws on torrenting and VPN guides from Comparitech, VPNAlert, Gizmodo, Earthsims and Security.org. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We read every source on 5 October 2026. The main source we relied on is Comparitech’s NordVPN torrenting guide. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
