NordVPN and Torrenting (2026): P2P Servers, Two Kill Switches, No Port Forwarding

NordVPN and torrenting work well together: NordVPN allows P2P traffic, labels P2P servers in its apps and offers two kill switches. The gap is port forwarding, which most reviews say NordVPN does not offer. This guide covers the setup, the kill switch choice and what the missing feature means. Our guide to NordVPN Kill Switch covers two types, off by default, and where it is missing.

Does NordVPN Allow Torrenting?

Yes. Cloudwards confirms that NordVPN allows torrenting and runs P2P-optimised servers in several countries. VPNAlert adds that P2P works across NordVPN’s network, with the P2P servers tuned for it. Cloudwards also notes that NordVPN’s servers run from RAM, so nothing is written to disk.

Our torrenting VPN guide compares the field, and our NordVPN review covers its audits.

How to Set Up NordVPN and Torrenting Safely

First, open the app’s settings and turn on the kill switch; Impulsec notes it is not on by default. Then find the P2P category under Specialty Servers and pick the nearest one, as Comparitech suggests. Finally, start your torrent client and check for leaks.

Our DNS leak guide and IPv6 leak guide show the tests to run before downloading.

Internet Kill Switch or App Kill Switch?

NordVPN has two. The Internet Kill Switch cuts all traffic if the VPN drops. The App Kill Switch closes only the apps you choose, such as qBittorrent or uTorrent, so other apps keep running, Comparitech explains.

For torrenting, the App Kill Switch is the targeted choice, and the Internet Kill Switch the safer one. Our kill switch guide explains both.

Port Forwarding: Mostly No

Comparitech, VPNAlert and Gizmodo all say NordVPN does not offer port forwarding. Security.org’s torrenting list says it does. We side with the majority, and NordVPN’s apps show no port forwarding setting that we could find documented.

Port forwarding helps seeding and incoming connections. If you need it, our port forwarding guide lists providers that offer it, including Proton VPN.

Our Proton VPN review and Private Internet Access review cover two of them. Both support port forwarding, which NordVPN lacks.

Speed and SOCKS5

VPNAlert notes NordVPN also supports a SOCKS5 proxy, which some torrent clients can use directly, though without encryption. For speed problems, our NordVPN speed guide covers the fixes. NordVPN and torrenting also mix well with NordLynx, its WireGuard-based protocol. Our NordVPN Windows guide shows the settings, and our Linux guide covers the CLI kill switch.

Torrenting copyrighted material without permission is illegal in many countries, VPN or not. NordVPN belongs to Nord Security, which also owns Surfshark. To test the setup first, see our NordVPN trial guide.

SOCKS5 or the Full App?

VPNAlert notes that NordVPN offers SOCKS5 proxy servers alongside the app. A SOCKS5 proxy changes the IP address for one app, usually a torrent client. It does not encrypt traffic, so your internet provider can still see it.

The full app encrypts everything and adds the kill switches. Use the app for privacy, and SOCKS5 only when speed in one client matters more. Our NordVPN SOCKS5 guide covers the setup in qBittorrent.

Binding the Client to the VPN

Many torrent clients can bind to a single network interface. Pointing the client at the VPN interface means it cannot use your normal connection, even if the tunnel drops. That works alongside NordVPN’s App Kill Switch as a second layer.

Check your client’s advanced network settings for an interface option. After setting it, disconnect the VPN once. Downloads should stop rather than continue on your real address.

Leak Tests Before Downloading

Run a DNS leak test and an IPv6 leak test before the first download. Our DNS leak guide and IPv6 leak guide show how. Then use a torrent-specific IP check with the client open, which shows the address peers see.

If any test shows your real IP, fix it before downloading. Switching servers does not help while a leak is giving you away.

Choosing a P2P Server

VPNAlert reports that P2P works on all NordVPN servers, with dedicated P2P servers as well. Comparitech lists them under Specialty Servers. Pick a P2P server close to you for speed. Distance adds delay, and torrents open many connections at once.

Why Port Forwarding Is Missing

Most sources, including Comparitech, VPNAlert and Gizmodo, say NordVPN does not offer port forwarding. Security.org is the exception. Without it, other peers cannot start connections to you, which mainly affects seeding. Our NordVPN port forwarding guide explains when that matters and which providers include it. Casual downloaders rarely notice. Heavy seeders and private-tracker users do, and they should compare providers before committing.

How We Research

This page draws on torrenting guides from Cloudwards, Comparitech, VPNAlert, Impulsec, Gizmodo, Security.org and Earthsims. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We read every source on 5 October 2026. The main source we relied on is Cloudwards’ NordVPN torrenting guide. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.

Does NordVPN support port forwarding?

Most sources say no: Comparitech, VPNAlert and Gizmodo. Security.org says yes. Proton VPN offers it.

Which NordVPN kill switch should I use for torrenting?

The App Kill Switch closes only your torrent client; the Internet Kill Switch blocks everything. Both work.

Is the NordVPN kill switch on by default?

Does NordVPN keep logs of torrenting?

Its servers run from RAM, and its no-logs policy has been audited, as our NordVPN review explains.

The Verdict

NordVPN and torrenting are a good match: P2P servers, two kill switches and RAM-only servers. If port forwarding matters to you, choose a provider that offers it.
