Every large provider advertises a student discount, and the numbers look enormous: 75% at one, 79% at another, 87% at a third.
Those are the standard two-year prices, available to anyone. The part that belongs to students is usually ten to twenty per cent stacked on top, and at some providers it is nothing at all.
How It Actually Works
Verification happens through a third party. Student Beans, UNiDAYS or SheerID confirm your enrolment, and the provider never sees your documents.
You are then sent to an education store. In most cases that store shows the same deep multi-year promotion the public site is running.
Sometimes a modest percentage is added. Published figures for the extra portion cluster around ten to twenty per cent.

Verification lasts longer than people expect. Reporting describes status remaining valid for around four academic years, with automatic re-verification.
The Numbers Disagree, and the Reason Is Instructive
Take one provider and look at what has been published about it this year.
Surfshark’s student discount is described as 20%, as roughly 15% on top of the existing promotion, and as up to 87% with four months added.
Those are not contradictory. The 87% is the two-year price with the student store’s extras; the 15 to 20% is the portion that verification actually contributes.
⚠️ The large number is the promotion. The small number is the discount. Any page quoting only the first is describing something you could have had without proving you are a student.
NordVPN shows the same pattern, published at 75% and separately at around 15% additional on long-term plans.
Which Providers Have a Programme
Seven were found operating live student programmes in 2026: Surfshark, NordVPN, ExpressVPN, Proton VPN, CyberGhost, Private Internet Access and IPVanish.
The deepest reported total is Surfshark’s, at roughly $1.49 a month on a two-year plan with four months added, through Student Beans.
NordVPN’s education price is reported near $2.34 a month on the two-year Basic plan through UNiDAYS.
CyberGhost is quoted at 79% through Student Beans, and Private Internet Access at 71% worldwide.

The Cheaper Route That Needs No Verification
Worth knowing before you spend twenty minutes proving you are enrolled.
Some providers already sell below what a student discount reaches. Private Internet Access has been quoted around $2.03 a month with no verification of any kind — our cheap VPN page compares the four-year totals, which is the comparison a discount page never shows.
And the free tier is genuinely free. Proton VPN’s free plan has no data cap and is funded by paying customers rather than by its users — which for a student on no budget is a better answer than any percentage.
⚠️ Check your university first. Many institutions provide their own VPN for library and journal access, at no cost. If that covers what you need, the only remaining reason to buy one is streaming — a much smaller purchase.
What the Discount Does Not Touch
This is the part that decides the total, and no student programme changes it.
The renewal. Every plan here is sold at an introductory rate for its first term and renews at the standard price — reporting describes roughly three to four times the introductory figure.
A student discount applies to the first term only. Four years of study, on a two-year plan, means one renewal at full price during your degree.

Whether to Wait for a Sale
Seasonal offers and student pricing sometimes stack, and sometimes the seasonal price is simply the same one.
We looked at that in detail. Last November’s headline prices matched what the same providers charged in September, and the offers ran for six weeks rather than a day.
So the honest answer is to buy when you need it. The refund window runs from purchase whenever you make it, and thirty days is enough to find out whether the service works on your campus network.
What Actually Matters on a Student Budget
Device count, more than price. A laptop, a phone, a tablet and possibly a television in a shared house. Unlimited connections are worth more than fifty cents a month.
Campus network behaviour. University networks frequently block VPN protocols, and the provider that connects reliably matters more than the one that is cheapest — obfuscation is the setting that decides it on many of them.
A refund window long enough to test during term. Every provider we rank gives at least thirty days, and CyberGhost gives 45.
And whether you need it at all. Our main ranking is a better starting point than any list built around a discount, because the discount is the least distinctive thing about these products.

Check your university before you buy anything. Institutional VPNs cover library and journal access at no cost, which removes most of the reason to subscribe.
And the renewal is still the number that decides the total. No student programme touches it, and one renewal will fall inside a four-year degree.
