VyprVPN WireGuard support sits in its apps alongside OpenVPN, Chameleon, L2TP/IPsec and IKEv2 on some platforms, VyprVPN’s support page lists. On iPhone, WireGuard needs iOS 12 or later and is labelled the most advanced option. VyprVPN’s TV app fixes the protocol to WireGuard. We found no manual WireGuard config files, so it is an app-only protocol as far as the sources show. Our page on VyprVPN on Chromebook covers the Android app and manual L2TP setup.
This guide covers the protocol list, setup, when Chameleon beats WireGuard and the caveats.
The Protocol List
VyprVPN’s support page names WireGuard, OpenVPN, Chameleon, PPTP and L2TP/IPsec, with IKEv2 on select platforms. It calls PPTP deprecated, with limited help for connection issues. Chameleon uses OpenVPN with scrambled metadata to get past deep packet inspection, blocking and throttling. Our page on VyprVPN on Linux covers OpenVPN, the WireGuard client and the retired CLI.

VyprVPN WireGuard Setup on iPhone
VyprVPN’s iOS guide gives the steps. Install the app, sign in, tap Customize in the bottom left, choose Protocol and select WireGuard, then close settings and connect. It needs iOS 12 or later.
On Windows and Android, the protocol menu sits in the app’s settings. Our VyprVPN Windows guide covers the desktop app.

WireGuard or Chameleon?
Use WireGuard for everyday speed. Switch to Chameleon on networks that block VPNs, since it disguises traffic at some cost in speed. Our VyprVPN speed guide explains why the hub city matters as much as the protocol.

The Kill Switch Caveat
Tom’s Guide found VyprVPN’s Windows kill switch blocked WireGuard and OpenVPN traffic when the VPN dropped. Apps with their own DNS settings still sent requests, though. Turn off custom DNS in browsers and other apps you rely on. iOS has no kill switch at all, Tom’s Guide adds. Our guide to VyprVPN OpenVPN covers apps, Ubuntu and DD-WRT setups.
WireGuard on TV
VyprVPN’s TV app fixes the protocol to WireGuard and the DNS to VyprDNS, with the kill switch off, its support pages say. Our VyprVPN Firestick guide covers the TV app.
Checking the Connection
After connecting, confirm the new address with our VPN test page, then run our DNS leak guide. Manual setups need the most care here, since DNS settings may not come from the provider’s app.
OpenVPN on Desktops
VyprVPN’s support page still calls OpenVPN the recommended protocol for desktops. In practice, try both on your own network: run a speed test on each, at the same hub and time of day, and keep the steadier result. Our WireGuard vs OpenVPN guide explains the trade-offs.
L2TP/IPsec and IKEv2
VyprVPN supports L2TP/IPsec and IKEv2 on select platforms, its support page says. These suit devices with built-in clients but no VyprVPN app. For phones that move between networks, IKEv2 reconnects quickly. Our IKEv2 vs WireGuard guide compares them.
Why PPTP Should Stay Off
VyprVPN calls PPTP deprecated and offers limited help with it. Older protocols lack the protections modern ones provide, so leave PPTP off unless a legacy device has no other option.
Torrenting With WireGuard
SafetyDetectives notes P2P on all VyprVPN servers. Bind your torrent client to the VPN interface because of the DNS caveat, as our VyprVPN torrenting guide explains.
VyprVPN WireGuard on Android
On Android, the protocol menu sits in the app’s settings, and Connection Per App lets you keep heavy apps outside the tunnel. Turn on Android’s Always-on VPN for VyprVPN so it reconnects after restarts. Our Android VPN guide compares providers.
Testing the Protocols
Run three speed tests on each protocol at the same hub. Note the median, since single tests vary. If WireGuard is slower than expected, the hub is likely far away; Tom’s Guide traced VyprVPN’s servers to seven hubs. Pick the nearest one before blaming the protocol.
A Quick Rule
Normal network? VyprVPN WireGuard. Blocked or throttled network? Chameleon. Legacy device without the app? L2TP/IPsec or IKEv2 where supported. Never PPTP unless nothing else works on that device.
Gaming and Streaming
For gaming, WireGuard adds the least delay of VyprVPN’s protocols, but distance to the hub still matters most. For streaming, pick a hub in the same region as the service, such as Chicago or Miami for US services. Our gaming VPN guide explains what a VPN can and cannot do for games.
Keeping the App Updated
Protocol improvements arrive through app updates, so keep VyprVPN current on every device. After an update, check that the protocol setting stayed on WireGuard, since updates can reset choices. Then run a quick address test to confirm the tunnel works as before.
Quick Check
After switching protocol, confirm the new address and run a DNS test. Then open the apps you use most to check they still work as expected, including banking and streaming apps.
VyprVPN’s Record
One VyprVPN audit appears in our audit table, by Leviathan Security in 2018, before Certida LLC of Texas bought it in 2023. The VyprVPN review on our site covers the rest.
How We Research
This page draws on VyprVPN’s support pages on protocols, iOS WireGuard setup and the TV app, Tom’s Guide’s VyprVPN review and our audit table. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 7 October 2026. The main source we relied on is VyprVPN’s protocol page. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
VyprVPN WireGuard FAQ
It does, in its apps and as the fixed protocol on TV.
Customize, Protocol, then WireGuard; iOS 12 or later is needed.
We found no manual WireGuard config files.
WireGuard for speed, Chameleon for blocked networks.
VyprVPN calls it deprecated, with limited support.
The Verdict
VyprVPN WireGuard support is solid inside the apps, with Chameleon as the fallback for blocked networks. Disable custom DNS in apps because of the kill switch caveat.
