Free VPN Data Limits (2026): From 2 GB to Unlimited, and the Catches

Free VPN data limits range from about 500 MB to unlimited. Gizmodo’s 2026 testing found most free App Store VPNs cap data at 500 MB to 2 GB a month, and that apps with no cap often fund themselves by selling browsing data. Among reputable providers, HighTechSociety lists TunnelBear at 2 GB and Windscribe, PrivadoVPN and ZoogVPN at 10 GB, with Proton VPN and hide.me uncapped. Each free plan limits something else instead, such as devices or countries. Our guide to Windscribe Free covers 10 GB a month, 10 countries and no email needed.

This guide compares the limits, explains what a cap means in practice and shows how to stretch one.

Free VPN Data Limits by Provider

Proton VPN Free: no data cap, one device, 10 countries assigned automatically. Windscribe Free: 10 GB with a confirmed email, 2 GB without. PrivadoVPN Free: 10 GB on one device. TunnelBear Free: 2 GB. Hotspot Shield Free: no data cap but one location and adverts on mobile, Top10VPN notes. Opera’s browser VPN has no cap but covers only the browser.

What the Other Limits Are

Uncapped plans trade data for something else. Proton’s free plan assigns the country and covers one device, Gizmodo notes. Hotspot Shield’s offers a single location. Toolradar reports TunnelBear removed country choice from its free plan in January 2026. Our free VPN roundup compares the wider field.

Free VPN data limits: capped compared with uncapped plans

What a Cap Means in Practice

Browsing, email and messaging use little data, so 2 GB can last a month of light use on public Wi-Fi. Video uses far more, so a few HD episodes can exhaust a 10 GB plan. Our free VPN for iPhone guide covers phone use.

Stretching Free VPN Data Limits

Connect only on untrusted networks, such as café or hotel Wi-Fi. Lower video quality in streaming apps. Pause background updates and cloud sync while connected. Use split tunnelling, where the app offers it, to send only the apps that need protection through the VPN.

Who Funds Unlimited Free Plans?

Gizmodo warns that free apps with no cap and no clear business model often pay for themselves with your data. Proton funds its free plan through paid subscribers and has five audits in our table. Check the owner and audit record before trusting any uncapped app.

Free VPN Data Limits on Phones

Phones use mobile data and Wi-Fi interchangeably. If the free VPN connects on mobile data too, it uses the allowance there. Set the app to connect only on untrusted Wi-Fi where possible.

Speed on Free Plans

HighTechSociety measured Proton’s free servers at around 15% average speed loss and notes free servers run at 1 Gbps against 10 Gbps for paid users. Check each provider’s speed policy on its free plan page.

When the Allowance Runs Out

PrivadoVPN Free moves you to slower servers after its 10 GB, our tables record. Check other providers’ help pages before relying on a free plan for travel.

Free VPN Data Limits and Streaming

Streaming is the fastest way to exhaust a cap, and free servers are often blocked anyway. Proton’s support pages note that streaming support is for paid plans.

Trials Instead

If you need full data for a week, a trial may suit better: our free VPN trial guide explains how trials and guarantees work.

Free VPN Data Limits and Several Devices

Windscribe Free shares its 10 GB across unlimited devices, so a phone and a laptop draw from one allowance. Proton VPN Free covers one device at a time, and PrivadoVPN Free one device.

Upgrading

If you keep hitting a cap, compare paid plans with the same provider first; apps and settings carry over. Our Proton VPN free guide explains Proton’s upgrade path.

Browser-Only Options

Opera’s built-in VPN has no data cap but protects only the browser, as our Opera VPN guide explains. It suits light browsing, not apps.

Quick Check

Open the free VPN app’s data counter after a typical day of use. Multiply by thirty to see whether the free VPN data limits of your chosen plan will last the month.

Kill Switch on Free Plans

Proton’s free plan includes the kill switch and Stealth, Toolradar notes. Check the settings of other free plans, since features differ.

Ads and Tracking

Hotspot Shield’s free plan shows adverts on mobile. Proton’s and Windscribe’s free plans carry no adverts, Toolradar and Security.org report.

Who Free Plans Suit

Students, travellers and anyone protecting occasional public Wi-Fi sessions fit free plans well. Heavy streamers and households do not.

Privacy on Free Plans

A cap does not change how private a plan is. What matters is the no-logs policy and whether an audit checked it; Proton’s free plan shares the audited policy of its paid plans. Our guide to Free VPN Risks covers malware, tracking, leaks and botnets.

Closed Services

Atlas VPN, which offered 5 GB free, shut down in April 2024, as our Atlas VPN alternatives guide explains.

How We Research

This page draws on Gizmodo’s 2026 iPhone VPN testing, HighTechSociety’s and Toolradar’s 2026 free VPN roundups, Top10VPN’s Hotspot Shield review and our free plan tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 8 October 2026. The main source we relied on is HighTechSociety’s free VPN roundup. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.

Free VPN Data Limits FAQ

Which free VPN has no data limit?

Proton VPN Free, among reputable providers, plus hide.me.

How much data do free VPNs give?

Typically 500 MB to 10 GB a month; some have no cap.

Is 2 GB enough?

For light browsing and messaging, yes; not for video.

Is 10 GB enough for streaming?

Only a few HD episodes a month.

The Verdict

Free VPN data limits matter less than who funds the plan. Proton VPN Free has no cap and an audited policy; 10 GB plans suit light use; anything unknown and unlimited deserves suspicion.
