Every published 2026 test of ExpressVPN with Netflix we could find says the same thing: it works. They disagree on almost everything else. One counts fourteen libraries, another checks four, and a third calls it a runner-up to NordVPN rather than the leader.
That is not because anyone is wrong. Each test asked a different question, on a different day, with a different sample. This page sets the results side by side, names who ran each one, and explains what none of them measures.
ExpressVPN and Netflix: The Short Answer
Yes, ExpressVPN works with Netflix in every 2026 test we found. The US, UK and Canadian libraries opened in all of them, and Gizmodo’s September 2026 test added Japan.
How many libraries depends on who counted. Flixboss tried more than 40 countries and got 14. CyberInsider reports over 12, having checked three. Neither is a promise from ExpressVPN, which does not publish a list.
It is not the clear leader. VPNpro’s comparative report this year put NordVPN first and ExpressVPN among the runners-up. Our ExpressVPN review covers the rest of the service.
Five Tests, Five Different Questions
Here is what each tester reported about ExpressVPN and Netflix in 2026, with the date and the scope of the test.

The first four tests looked at ExpressVPN on its own. VPNpro compared it with rivals and ranked NordVPN ahead, though it did not place ExpressVPN at the bottom; it named it a runner-up alongside Surfshark, Proton VPN and CyberGhost. Two of those are siblings of the leaders: CyberGhost shares ExpressVPN’s parent, Kape Technologies, and Surfshark shares NordVPN’s, Nord Security.
Why the Numbers Disagree
The sample is different. Flixboss tried more than 40 countries, so it can report a number like 14. CyberInsider checked three, so its figure of over 12 regions comes from ExpressVPN’s reputation rather than its own test. Gizmodo named four that worked and stopped there.
The duration is different. Most tests are a single session: connect, open Netflix, see whether the catalogue changes. Technerdo was the exception, re-testing a group of streaming VPNs over 21 days in April. In its results, NordVPN alone avoided the proxy error for the whole period across the US, UK, Japan and Canada; the part of the report we read does not give ExpressVPN’s result, so we do not count it above.
The target moves. Netflix blocks VPN addresses as it finds them, and providers replace them. A test from February and a test from September are measuring two different moments, so both can be right.
⚠️ ExpressVPN itself will not give a number. Flixboss asked its support team before testing, and the answer was that most of the important catalogues should work. That is a reasonable answer, and it is also why any figure you read comes from a tester rather than the provider.
What No Test Measures
Your device. Nearly every test above ran on a laptop or phone. A smart TV or streaming stick uses a different app, and results there can differ. Our smart TV guide and our Fire Stick guide cover the options.
Picture quality. Netflix recommends 15 Mbps for Ultra HD. CNET measured an 18% average download loss with ExpressVPN, which leaves most home connections well above that line. On a slow line, though, the loss can decide whether 4K holds. Our speed guide explains what affects it.
The library you actually want. A test that opened the US catalogue says nothing about Japan’s anime or the UK’s BBC titles. If one country matters most, look for a test that named it: our Japan guide, our UK guide and our Canada guide cover the three most asked about.
ExpressVPN Against NordVPN for Netflix
The comparative evidence favours NordVPN. VPNpro found it opened the US, Canadian and UK libraries in HD at once, without changing servers. Technerdo, in its longer test, reported zero proxy errors for NordVPN across four libraries over three weeks.
ExpressVPN costs less over time, which matters if streaming is the main reason you pay. On the current offer, its Basic plan is $83.72 for 28 months and then $99.95 a year. If Netflix Shows the Proxy Error
Sooner or later, most VPN users see Netflix’s proxy message, often with the code m7111-5059. It means that server’s address is on Netflix’s list, not that your account has a problem.
Switch servers first. Gizmodo lists this as the fix that works most often, and it costs nothing. Try another server in the same country before changing anything else.
Then change the protocol. Gizmodo also suggests OpenVPN over TCP, which can get through where the default protocol has been flagged.
Then try another device. A phone or laptop app can succeed where a TV app fails, which points to the device rather than the server. If nothing works, the address range may be flagged for now, and a different city in the same country is worth one more try.
Three Things No VPN Changes
The ad-supported plan. Netflix states that VPNs are not supported on its cheaper tier with adverts, as our Netflix guide records. That restriction sits on your account, so ExpressVPN cannot get round it, and neither can any rival. Only a plan upgrade does.
Live events. Netflix says the same about live content, and sports rights are sold more narrowly than films and series. A test that opened a country’s on-demand catalogue says nothing about its live broadcasts.
The terms of service. Reaching another country’s catalogue with a VPN does breach Netflix’s terms, and Netflix reserves the right to end a subscription over it. In practice, enforcement means the proxy error rather than a closed account, and none of the testers above reported one.
Streaming Devices and ExpressVPN

We took the test results from Gizmodo, Flixboss, CyberInsider, Cloudwards, VPNpro and Technerdo, each named with its date where used and read on 25 September 2026. CNET supplied the speed figure, via our speed table, and our ExpressVPN and NordVPN pricing pages supplied the prices. Netflix itself sets the 4K bandwidth figure.
