Speed: Not Close
Comparisons usually quote speed numbers from different labs, which proves nothing. This one doesn’t have to: CNET tested both providers in the same round, on the same connection, using the same methodology.
NordVPN lost 2.9% of baseline download speed. Surfshark lost 21%. For context in that same round, ExpressVPN lost 18% and Proton VPN 16% — meaning Surfshark finished behind not just NordVPN but most of the premium field.
Other labs are kinder to Surfshark. TechRadar clocked it above 950 Mbps on WireGuard, level with NordVPN. Both results can be true: percentage retention and raw throughput measure different things, and a provider that gives up a fifth of a fast line still saturates anything you are likely to do with it.
The practical read: you will not notice the difference streaming. 4K needs about 25 Mbps, and both clear that by an order of magnitude. You will notice it on gigabit fibre, on large transfers, and on long international routes, where NordVPN’s margin is real and consistent. Privacy: Six Audits Against Two
Both providers claim no logs. The difference is how often an outside firm has checked.
NordVPN has completed six independent no-logs audits — the first two by PricewaterhouseCoopers Switzerland in 2018 and 2020, then Deloitte in 2022, 2023, 2024, and again at the end of 2025. That is the deepest verification record of any provider we have reviewed except ExpressVPN.
Surfshark has two, both by Deloitte, in 2023 and June 2025, conducted under the ISAE 3000 standard. Surfshark has commissioned other audits — Cure53 examined its browser extensions in 2018 and its infrastructure in 2021 and again in 2026, and SecuRing reviewed infrastructure security in December 2025 — but those verify security posture, not the logging claim. It is a distinction most comparisons blur.
Jurisdiction compounds the gap. NordVPN operates from Panama, outside every intelligence-sharing arrangement and with no data-retention law. Surfshark operates from the Netherlands, a member of the 9 Eyes group. Dutch law imposes no retention requirement on VPN providers, so the practical exposure is limited — but the legal shelter is thinner, and both companies run RAM-only servers, so neither has much to hand over regardless.

Devices: The One Surfshark Wins Outright
NordVPN allows 10 simultaneous connections. Surfshark allows unlimited — on every tier, with no upsell and no cap written into the terms.
For a single user this is noise. For a household it is the whole argument. Count honestly: two phones, two laptops, a tablet, a smart TV, a games console, a streaming stick — that is eight before anyone visits. NordVPN’s Meshnet links up to 60 of your own devices to each other, but that is a different feature and does not raise the VPN connection limit.
Winner: Surfshark, decisively.
Streaming: A Draw
Both unblock the major platforms reliably. Independent reviewers report consistent access to Netflix across multiple regional libraries, plus BBC iPlayer, Disney+, Hulu, and Amazon Prime Video, with both providers.
Surfshark’s unlimited-device policy gives it a practical edge here that has nothing to do with unblocking: the TV, the tablet and two phones can all stream simultaneously without anyone getting disconnected.
Access shifts month to month as platforms and providers trade moves. Both carry 30-day refund windows, which is the only reliable way to confirm the specific library you care about.

Price: Read the Second Number
This is where most comparisons stop too early.
Intro pricing on two-year plans: NordVPN Basic runs roughly $3.09–3.49 a month, Surfshark Starter about $2.49. Surfshark is cheaper, but not dramatically — and both bill the full term upfront rather than monthly.
Renewal pricing is a different story. NordVPN’s own checkout states the Basic plan renews at $139.08 a year — about $11.59 a month. Surfshark converts to annual billing at roughly $79 a year, around $6.58 a month.
That is a $60 annual gap that appears only after the first term ends, and it is disclosed in small print at checkout by both companies rather than hidden. Auto-renewal is on by default for both. Whichever you pick, note the renewal figure at purchase and set a reminder.
Winner: Surfshark, and by more than the intro prices suggest.
Features Neither Comparison Mentions
NordVPN includes specialty servers Surfshark has no equivalent for: Double VPN, Onion Over VPN, and obfuscated servers for restrictive networks. Threat Protection Pro blocks malware and scans downloads, but only from the Plus tier upward — Basic gets a simpler version. P2P runs on dedicated servers rather than the whole network, and there is no port forwarding.
Surfshark puts every VPN feature in its cheapest tier: CleanWeb ad and tracker blocking, MultiHop double-routing, Bypasser split tunneling, and Alternative ID for generating throwaway signup identities. P2P works across the entire network. The higher tiers add antivirus and data-broker removal rather than VPN capability.
That structural difference matters if you buy cheap: Surfshark’s entry plan is the full product, NordVPN’s entry plan is not.
Which Should You Buy?
Buy NordVPN if: speed is a first-order concern, you want the deepest verified privacy record, or your work involves restrictive networks where obfuscated servers matter. Ten devices covers most single users comfortably.
Buy Surfshark if: you are covering a household of devices, you intend to keep the subscription past the first term, or you want every feature in the cheapest tier rather than paying up for the full set.
