Proton VPN price starts at zero: the free plan has no data cap. Paid plans, as CostBench checked against Proton’s page on 8 July 2026, run from $2.99 a month for VPN Plus on a two-year term to $12.99 a month for Proton Unlimited billed monthly. Promotions move those figures, and renewal comes in higher, at about $83.88 a year for VPN Plus according to our renewal table. For separate accounts or one shared account, see our page on VPN Family Plans.
This guide lays out the list prices, the promotions, the renewal, and which plan suits whom.
Proton VPN Price List
CostBench’s July 2026 check lists VPN Plus at $9.99 a month billed monthly, $4.99 a month on a one-year plan and $2.99 a month on a two-year plan. Proton Unlimited costs $12.99 monthly, $9.99 a month for a year and $7.99 a month for two years.
Two-year plans are billed upfront. Toolradar lists $71.76 for two years of VPN Plus and $191.76 for two years of Unlimited. Check the checkout total, not just the monthly figure.

Promotions Change the Numbers
Proton runs frequent offers. Cybernews and VPNPro quoted the one-year VPN Plus plan at $3.99 a month rather than $4.99. Slickdeals recorded an August 2026 sale with two years of VPN Plus at $83.76, or $3.49 a month, which is higher than Toolradar’s $71.76 figure, so offers do not always mean the lowest price.
VPNPro also mentions a student discount of 72% on a one-year VPN Plus plan. Our VPN student discount guide covers how such offers work.
What Renewal Costs
Our renewal table puts VPN Plus renewal at about $83.88 a year, roughly $6.99 a month. That is well above the introductory two-year rate. VPNPro gives the steps to turn off automatic renewal: open your Proton account, choose Subscription, then Cancel subscription, then Continue.
Set a reminder before the term ends, so you can decide whether to renew, switch plans or look for a new offer. A comparison of renewals across providers sits in our renewal price guide, and NordVPN’s figures in our NordVPN price guide.

VPN Plus or Proton Unlimited?
VPN Plus covers the VPN itself. Proton Unlimited adds Proton’s other services: Cybernews lists 500 GB of Proton Drive storage, Proton Pass and expanded Proton Mail features. If you already pay for encrypted email or cloud storage, Unlimited can replace several subscriptions.
If you only need a VPN, VPN Plus is the cheaper choice. Our Proton VPN value guide weighs the features.

The Free Plan
Toolradar notes the free plan has unlimited data and no ads, which few major VPNs match. It has fewer servers than the paid plans and is the easiest way to test Proton before paying. Our Proton VPN free guide covers its limits.
Devices and Payment
Techlore lists 10 devices on Proton’s paid plans. It also notes Proton accepts cash and some cryptocurrency, alongside cards, which suits buyers who want less personal data attached to the purchase.
How the Price Buys Trust
Part of what the Proton VPN price pays for is the audit record: our audit table counts five no-logs audits by Securitum, and Proton is based in Switzerland. Our VPN audit tracker compares that with other providers. A cheaper VPN with fewer audits asks for more trust.
Which Term to Choose
A monthly plan suits a short trip or a test beyond the free plan. One year balances cost and commitment. The two-year plan gives the lowest Proton VPN price per month but asks for the most money upfront and the longest wait before you can switch without losing value. If you are unsure, start on the free plan, then a short paid term.
Cutting the Proton VPN Price Further
Three habits lower what you pay. Wait for a seasonal sale if you are not in a hurry, since Proton runs them regularly, as the Slickdeals thread shows. Check the student offer if you qualify. And compare the sale’s total against the list two-year price before buying, since a discount on a higher base can still cost more.
Refunds
Proton’s terms allow a 30-day full refund on paid plans, our refund table records. The process is covered in our Proton VPN refund guide.

How We Research
This page draws on CostBench’s July 2026 price check, Toolradar, Cybernews, VPNPro and a Slickdeals thread, plus our renewal and refund tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 6 October 2026. List prices as checked by CostBench against Proton’s page on 8 July 2026; promotions vary. The main source we relied on is CostBench’s Proton VPN price record. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
