PureVPN WireGuard support covers most of its apps. PureVPN’s iOS help recommends WireGuard, the macOS app offers it from macOS 10.15 with a protocol extension, and the Linux apps switch to it with one command. Routers can use it through manual configuration files. This guide shows where it is, how to turn it on and when to choose something else.
Where PureVPN WireGuard Is Available
For iPhone and iPad, PureVPN’s help article lists WireGuard as the recommended protocol, alongside UDP, TCP and IKEv2; our PureVPN iPhone guide covers it. On Mac, WireGuard and UDP need macOS 10.15 or later plus a protocol extension, as our PureVPN Mac guide explains.
Linux users get WireGuard in the GUI app, and the command-line app switches with purevpn-cli –protocol wireguard, as our PureVPN Linux guide shows. On Windows, the app has a protocol tab with automatic selection; our Windows guide covers it.

How to Switch to WireGuard
PureVPN’s help gives the iPhone path: More, then VPN, Advanced, and Connection Protocol. Mac users open Preferences, then Protocol, and allow the extension if prompted. Linux users run the protocol command or pick it in the GUI settings.
PureVPN’s apps also offer a fallback option on some platforms, which tries another protocol if the first fails. Leave it on if you move between networks often.

PureVPN WireGuard on Routers
PureVPN’s DD-WRT guide includes a WireGuard section: you paste the private key, address and DNS values from a WireGuard configuration file. That route suits routers whose processors struggle with OpenVPN, as our PureVPN router guide explains. On MikroTik, PureVPN documents IKEv2 instead.
WireGuard or OpenVPN?
WireGuard was faster than OpenVPN and IKEv2 in the 2026 gigabit test reported by Tech Insider, as our IKEv2 vs WireGuard page shows. It also uses a much smaller codebase. OpenVPN, in TCP mode, still helps on networks that interfere with UDP traffic.
Start with WireGuard. Switch to OpenVPN TCP if a hotel, school or office network blocks the connection, and to IKEv2 on phones that change networks constantly. Our WireGuard vs OpenVPN page covers the trade-offs.

Quantum Encryption
Unite.AI’s April 2026 review notes PureVPN rolling out what it calls Quantum Encryption in selected countries. Details vary by app and region, so check your app’s settings. Our post-quantum VPN guide explains what quantum-resistant key exchange protects against.
What PureVPN Costs
On 5 October 2026, PureVPN’s order page listed the Standard 2-year plan at $58.20 for the first 27 months, renewing at $47.95 a year; a deals page showed a $54.95 renewal. WireGuard comes with every plan. Our refund guide covers the 31-day window.

When PureVPN WireGuard Will Not Connect
If WireGuard fails on one network but works elsewhere, the network is probably blocking UDP traffic. Hotel, school and office networks do this most often. Switch to OpenVPN TCP for that network, and keep WireGuard as the default everywhere else.
If WireGuard fails everywhere on a Mac, check the macOS version and whether the protocol extension was allowed in System Settings. On Linux, update the app and try the protocol command again. Our PureVPN troubleshooting guide covers wider failures.
Speed Tips for PureVPN WireGuard
Start by choosing a server near you; distance adds delay that no protocol removes, and WireGuard cannot make up for a server on another continent. Measure your speed without the VPN first, then with WireGuard, so you know what loss is normal on your own line and router.
If speeds drop sharply on one server, try another in the same city before changing protocol. Busy servers recover, so a slow one at peak time may be fine an hour later. Our router setup guide explains why routers in particular benefit from WireGuard, since their processors handle all encryption for every device.
PureVPN WireGuard and Battery Life
PureVPN recommends WireGuard on iOS, and in the comparisons we read WireGuard does less work per packet than OpenVPN, which helps battery life on phones and laptops. If your phone’s battery drains faster with the VPN on, check that WireGuard is selected rather than an older protocol.
Battery saving can still pause VPN apps in the background on Android, so exempt PureVPN in the battery settings if the connection drops when the screen is off. Our Android VPN troubleshooting page shows where those battery settings sit on common phones.
WireGuard and Privacy
Protocol choice does not change the logging policy. PureVPN’s no-logs policy has been audited by KPMG, according to our audit table. Our kill switch guide explains the protection that matters on any protocol.
For Android TV boxes, our PureVPN Android TV guide shows where the protocol setting sits on a TV.
How We Research
This page draws on PureVPN’s protocol help articles for iOS, macOS and Windows, its Linux and DD-WRT guides, Unite.AI’s review and Tech Insider’s protocol test. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 5 October 2026. PureVPN showed two plan grids on different pages, and add-on prices differed between sources. The main source we relied on is PureVPN’s Linux help section. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
PureVPN WireGuard FAQ
Yes, on iOS, macOS 10.15 and later, Linux and routers, and through the Windows app’s protocol settings.
More, then VPN, Advanced, Connection Protocol, per PureVPN’s help.
It needs macOS 10.15 or later and a protocol extension, PureVPN says.
WireGuard was faster in a 2026 gigabit test reported by Tech Insider; your network may differ.
Yes, on DD-WRT and similar firmware, using values from a WireGuard config file.
The Verdict
PureVPN WireGuard is available on most apps and routers, and it should be your default. Keep OpenVPN TCP for restrictive networks and IKEv2 for constant network switching. PureVPN belongs to Gaditek, which absorbed Ivacy in 2024.
