Surfshark Sky Broadband problems are a known complaint. On Sky’s community forum, a user reported Surfshark stopping on Sky FTTP with only OpenVPN still connecting, and said Surfshark’s support called it a common issue for Sky customers. VPNCentral explains that Sky Broadband Shield, Sky’s filtering, can block VPN traffic, though Sky does not ban VPNs. Sky Go is a separate question: it works only in the UK and Ireland, and Sky detects VPNs strictly.
This guide covers both: getting Surfshark to connect on Sky Broadband, and what Surfshark can do for Sky Go.
Why Surfshark Can Fail on Sky Broadband
VPNCentral lists Sky Broadband Shield, blacklisted IP ranges and router quirks as the usual causes. A superuser on the Sky forum suspects Sky’s internal routing for Broadband Shield and Broadband Buddy affects VPNs even when those products are not in use. Neither Sky nor Surfshark has published an explanation, so treat these as working theories.
Surfshark Sky Broadband Fixes in Order
First, turn off Sky Broadband Shield in your Sky account, under Broadband, then Sky Broadband Shield, and restart the Sky Hub, as VPNCentral describes. Second, change protocol: VPNCentral says WireGuard usually works on Sky, while the forum user found only OpenVPN connecting. Try each, as our Surfshark WireGuard guide and OpenVPN guide explain.
Third, VPNCentral suggests checking MTU and IPv6 settings. One forum user fixed the problem by setting a static IP, and another switched provider. Our Surfshark disconnection guide covers further steps.

Protocols on Sky
The reports disagree: VPNCentral finds WireGuard usually works on Sky, while one forum user found only OpenVPN connecting and losing speed. The difference may depend on the line type and date. Test WireGuard first for speed, then OpenVPN if it fails.

Sky Go Rules
Sky Go works for viewers in the UK and Ireland, PrivacySavvy notes, with an error saying it is restricted to users there. PCRisk explains that since 1 January 2021, after Brexit, UK Sky customers no longer have portability rights to watch Sky elsewhere in the EU. Irish customers keep EU portability.
A VPN cannot give access to another Sky market’s content, PCRisk adds. For a UK customer abroad, a UK server can make Sky Go see a UK address, but that is outside the portability rules.

Surfshark and Sky Go
Comparitech found Sky Go detects VPNs strictly in its July and August 2026 tests. We found no independent Surfshark-only Sky Go test. For Sky Go Italia, html.it notes Surfshark servers in Milan and Rome. Use Surfshark’s UK servers for a UK address, and expect to switch servers when blocked. Our page on TunnelBear with Sky Go covers the blocked test result and what to try.
Surfshark Sky Broadband on Fire TV
A forum user reported fixing Surfshark on a Fire TV stick on Sky Broadband by setting a static IP address. If the Fire TV app connects but nothing loads, try that and a protocol change, as our Surfshark Firestick guide explains.
Testing the Connection
After each fix, confirm the VPN address with our VPN test page and run our DNS leak guide. If the tunnel connects but leaks DNS, Sky’s filtering may still see your requests.
Sky Broadband and Work VPNs
VPNCentral notes the same Sky filtering can affect work VPNs. If your employer’s VPN fails on Sky Broadband while Surfshark works, or the other way round, turn off Broadband Shield first, then speak to your IT team. Running both VPNs at once usually causes conflicts, so disconnect one before using the other.
A Quick Rule
Surfshark will not connect on Sky? Turn off Broadband Shield and restart the hub. Still failing? Try WireGuard, then OpenVPN.
When to Contact Support
If nothing works, contact Surfshark’s live chat and mention Sky Broadband; the forum user was told it is a common issue.
Sky Go and BBC iPlayer
Many UK viewers use Sky Go alongside BBC iPlayer. Surfshark opened iPlayer on all UK servers in Comparitech’s August 2026 test, as our Surfshark iPlayer guide explains.
A Router as a Workaround
If Surfshark struggles on individual devices on Sky Broadband, running it on your own router behind the Sky Hub can help, as our Surfshark router guide explains. Test after each change.

How We Research
This page draws on a Sky Community thread on Surfshark, VPNCentral’s Sky VPN guide, PCRisk and PrivacySavvy on Sky Go rules, Comparitech’s 2026 Sky Go tests, html.it and pricing from Surfshark, Security.org and VPNOverview. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 6 October 2026. Surfshark’s renewal table did not load, so renewal figures come from Security.org and VPNOverview. The main source we relied on is VPNCentral’s Sky VPN guide. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
Surfshark Sky Broadband and Sky Go FAQ
Sky Broadband Shield or Sky’s routing can interfere, per VPNCentral and the Sky forum.
Turn off Broadband Shield, restart the hub, then try WireGuard and OpenVPN.
No, VPNCentral says, though its filtering can break some connections.
We found no Surfshark-only test; Comparitech says Sky Go detects VPNs strictly.
Not under portability rules since 2021, per PCRisk.
The Verdict
Surfshark Sky Broadband problems often respond to turning off Broadband Shield and changing protocol. Sky Go is harder: strict VPN detection and post-Brexit rules limit what any VPN can do.
