NordVPN vs Hide.me is partly a story about one incident. In 2018 an attacker got into a NordVPN server through a rented data centre in Finland. Hide.me has avoided that failure mode by design: it runs its own servers rather than renting them, so no third-party host sits between the company and its hardware. NordVPN has since moved to RAM-only servers and published six no-logs assessments.
The two now represent different kinds of trust. NordVPN offers scale, speed and a long run of audits. Hide.me offers independence, a Malaysian base outside every intelligence alliance, and a free tier that asks for neither an email nor a card.

Hide.me’s interface is more technical. Reviewers describe it as rewarding power users and harder for beginners, which is where NordVPN’s apps pull ahead.
Privacy: Two Different Foundations
NordVPN has six published no-logs audits, by PwC and Deloitte, and operates from Panama, outside the alliances. Its 2018 breach came through a rented server; its response was to rebuild on RAM-only hardware.
Hide.me has one modern audit, from 2024, and the VPN Trust Initiative re-accredited it in 2026. Sources name the auditor differently, as Securitum or Altius IT. eVenture Ltd has run it from Labuan, Malaysia, since 2012 under the same founder, and it belongs to no group.

The Free Tier
Hide.me’s free plan asks for no email and no payment card, and its kill switch is on by default. Among providers we cover, only paid services such as Mullvad match that sign-up. NordVPN has no free plan.
The data limit is disputed. Our review found four published answers: a 10 GB monthly cap in reviews from spring 2026, unlimited data with one device and eight locations in later ones, and one article stating both unlimited and 2 GB. Safety Defaults
Hide.me turns its kill switch on by default, on the free plan as well as the paid one. Many free tiers switch it off to make the upgrade more attractive, and a kill switch that is off is the most common reason one appears not to work, as our kill switch guide explains.
NordVPN’s kill switch is available on every platform, and on iOS it is built in and always on. Both, in other words, protect a dropped connection properly once set up.

Price
NordVPN Basic costs $94.23 for 27 months, then $139.08 a year. Our NordVPN pricing page covers every plan.
Hide.me costs around $2.69 a month on its 26-month plan, and its renewal is reported to stay at the same rate. One source, however, describes auto-renewals billing higher than the signup price, so read the checkout page and keep a copy. Our renewal price table shows why a flat renewal would be unusual.
Features and Everyday Use
