Does Surfshark Have Port Forwarding? (2026) No, and Who Will Miss It

Surfshark port forwarding is not available. Top10VPN, VPNAlert, vpncentral and CyberInsider all report that Surfshark does not offer it, and Top10VPN links that to slower seeding in torrent clients. For most people, that changes little: in the tests we read, browsing, streaming and ordinary downloads work fine without it.

This guide explains what port forwarding does, who notices its absence, the workarounds, and which providers include it.

What Port Forwarding Does

Behind a VPN, other computers cannot start a connection to you; you can only reach out to them. Port forwarding opens a specific port on the VPN server so that incoming connections reach your device. That helps when you seed torrents, host a game server, or run a service other people connect to.

Our port forwarding guide explains the concept in more detail, including the security trade-off of opening ports.

Why Surfshark Leaves It Out

Top10VPN and CyberInsider tie the decision to security: an open port is a route into your device, and some providers prefer not to offer one at all. CyberInsider adds that most providers, including NordVPN and Mullvad, skip it for the same reason. VPNAlert notes Surfshark has no SOCKS5 proxy either.

Who Notices the Missing Surfshark Port Forwarding

Casual torrent users rarely notice. Downloads complete normally, and you can still seed to peers that connect out to you. Top10VPN found Surfshark fast enough for regular file-sharing despite the gap.

Heavy seeders, private-tracker users with ratio rules, and anyone hosting a server will notice. Without incoming connections, fewer peers can reach you, and uploads stay lower. Our Surfshark torrenting guide covers the rest of the setup.

Workarounds With Surfshark

Bypasser, Surfshark’s split tunnelling on desktop and Android, can keep a game or server outside the VPN while everything else stays protected. That restores incoming connections for that one app, at the cost of exposing your real address to it. Our split tunnelling guide explains the trade-off.

Router port forwarding on your home connection works the same way: it opens ports on your real address, not on the VPN. Surfshark’s static IP locations give you the same address each time, but VPNAlert does not list port forwarding among their features.

Providers That Include Port Forwarding

Top10VPN names AirVPN and Private Internet Access for port forwarding. Techlore’s comparison lists it on Proton VPN’s Plus plans and on Windscribe Pro, as our Proton VPN vs Windscribe page explains. PureVPN sells it as a paid add-on, as our PureVPN torrenting guide shows.

If port forwarding is essential, choose one of those, and test that the forwarded port shows as open from outside during the refund window.

Surfshark port forwarding alternatives: providers that include it

How to Tell Whether You Need It

Watch your torrent client. Many clients flag a connection as not connectable when incoming connections fail. If downloads complete and some peers still receive data from you, the missing Surfshark port forwarding costs you little. If your upload ratio on a private tracker stalls, it costs you more.

Test during the 30-day refund window with your real trackers and clients, and decide before the window closes. Note the upload ratio before and after, so the decision rests on your own numbers.

Dedicated IPs Do Not Add It

Vpncentral notes Surfshark sells dedicated IP addresses as an extra. A dedicated IP gives you an address only you use, which helps with blocks and banking logins, as our dedicated IP guide explains. It does not open inbound ports on Surfshark’s side.

Surfshark Port Forwarding on Linux and Servers

Home servers and NAS units are where open ports matter most. Surfshark’s Linux app keeps the kill switch, as our Surfshark Linux guide explains, but it does not add port forwarding. For a server others must reach, choose a provider that includes it, or keep the server outside the VPN.

Gaming Without Port Forwarding

Most online games work without inbound ports when you join someone else’s lobby. Hosting lobbies or peer-to-peer matches is where open ports help. If you host, keep the game outside Surfshark with Bypasser, or play without the VPN for that session. Our gaming VPN guide covers ping and protection.

How We Research

This page draws on Surfshark torrenting and review coverage from Top10VPN, VPNAlert, vpncentral and CyberInsider, Techlore’s Proton VPN and Windscribe comparison, and pricing from Surfshark, Security.org and VPNOverview. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 6 October 2026. Surfshark’s renewal table did not load, so renewal figures come from Security.org and VPNOverview. The main source we relied on is Top10VPN’s Surfshark torrenting guide. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
