When Hotspot Shield is not working, the fix usually lies in the network, the app or the protocol. Start by checking the internet without the VPN, then restart the app and device, update, and try another location. If you switch protocol to fix it, note one catch from PCWelt: Hotspot Shield’s kill switch works only with its own Hydra protocol, not with WireGuard or IKEv2. Free users may also mistake the plan’s limits for a fault.
This guide covers the fixes in order, platform-specific steps, the protocol trade-off and when to contact support.
Step One: Check the Internet Without the VPN
Turn Hotspot Shield off and open a few websites. If nothing loads, the problem is the network or device, not the VPN. Fix that first, then reconnect. Xolvie’s troubleshooting note puts this check first for the same reason.
Step Two: Restart the App and Device
Disconnect, close Hotspot Shield fully and reopen it. If it still stalls, restart the device. Xolvie notes connection failures often come from temporary network glitches or the VPN not starting properly, which a restart clears.

Step Three: Update the App and System
Install the latest Hotspot Shield version and any pending system updates. Old versions can clash with new operating systems. If updating does not help, uninstall and reinstall from the official website or app store.
Step Four: Change Location or Protocol
Pick a different virtual location, ideally one closer to you. If that fails, change protocol. PCWelt lists three: WireGuard, IKEv2 and Catapult Hydra, Hotspot Shield’s own protocol.
The catch: PCWelt found the kill switch works only with Hydra. If you switch to WireGuard or IKEv2 to get connected, your traffic will not be blocked when the tunnel drops. Switch back to Hydra once the problem clears. Our kill switch guide explains why that matters.

Step Five: Check Blocking Settings
Battery savers, data savers and firewalls can block VPN traffic, Xolvie notes. Disable them for Hotspot Shield or add an exception. Security software on Windows and Mac can do the same.
Platform-Specific Steps
On Android, give Hotspot Shield unrestricted background activity so the system does not stop it, Xolvie advises. Our Android VPN troubleshooting guide covers more.
On iPhone, keep the app open for a moment after tapping Connect, and remove and reinstall the VPN profile if it keeps failing. On Mac, our Mac VPN troubleshooting guide covers network extension prompts.
Public Wi-Fi Login Pages
Hotel and café networks often show a login page before you can browse. The VPN cannot connect until you complete it. Disconnect Hotspot Shield, sign in to the network, then reconnect. Our public Wi-Fi guide covers the routine.
Free Plan Limits That Look Like Faults
Security.org notes the free plan limits mobile speeds to about 2 Mbps, offers one virtual location and one device, shows adverts, and does not officially support streaming or torrenting. Slow video or a blocked stream on the free plan is usually the plan, not a fault. Our Hotspot Shield free guide covers the limits.

Checking Hotspot Shield Works Again
Once connected, confirm the new address with our VPN test page and run our DNS leak guide.
Hotspot Shield Not Working With Streaming
If Hotspot Shield connects but a streaming service shows a location error, the problem is the service detecting the VPN, not the connection. Try another location in the right country and clear the app’s cache. On the free plan, streaming is not officially supported. On Apple TV, there is no Hotspot Shield app, as our Hotspot Shield Apple TV guide explains.
Slow Speeds
Slow but connected usually points to distance or a busy location. Pick a closer location, and compare Hydra and WireGuard speeds, remembering the kill switch needs Hydra. Our Netflix VPN guide covers streaming speeds.
When Hotspot Shield Is Not Working on One Network Only
If Hotspot Shield is not working at work or school but works at home, that network may block VPNs. Some administrators do this on purpose. Follow the network’s rules, or try a mobile hotspot to confirm the cause.
A Quick Rule
Hotspot Shield not working anywhere? Update or reinstall. Not working on one network? Blame the network. Working but slow on the free plan? That is the plan.
Reinstalling Cleanly
If updates fail, uninstall Hotspot Shield, restart, and install it again from the official site or store. On Windows, check that no old network adapter remains, and re-enable any settings a fresh install reset. Still failing? Our Proton VPN vs Hotspot Shield page compares an alternative.
When to Contact Support
When none of the steps help, contact Hotspot Shield’s support with your device, app version, protocol and the error. If you bought recently, our refund table records a 45-day window, as our Hotspot Shield review notes. We also have a separate guide to NordVPN vs Hotspot Shield.

How We Research
This page draws on PCWelt’s Hotspot Shield review, Xolvie’s troubleshooting note, Security.org’s free plan review and our renewal and refund tables. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 6 October 2026. Renewal from our renewal table. The main source we relied on is PCWelt’s Hotspot Shield review. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
Hotspot Shield Not Working FAQ
Usually the network, an outdated app, a blocked protocol or a battery or firewall setting.
Hydra keeps the kill switch working, per PCWelt; try WireGuard or IKEv2 only to diagnose.
Security.org notes the free plan limits mobile speeds to about 2 Mbps.
Complete the network’s login page first, then reconnect.
Our refund table records 45 days.
The Verdict
Hotspot Shield not working is usually fixable in a few steps: check the network, restart, update, then change location or protocol. Return to Hydra afterwards to keep the kill switch.
