Surfshark for Xbox works through two routes, because Xbox consoles cannot install VPN apps. Surfshark’s own Xbox page names a VPN router or a Windows PC that shares its connection, by cable or mobile hotspot. It covers Xbox One, Series X, Series S and the Xbox 360. Surfshark’s Smart DNS, which some older guides still recommend, closed in February 2026.
This guide covers both routes, the settings that matter for gaming, and the common problems with party chat and ping.
Why Use Surfshark on an Xbox
A VPN hides your home IP address from other players, which makes DDoS attacks harder. It also protects the console on shared networks, such as a dorm or a hotel. Some players use it to reach other regions’ content.
A VPN rarely lowers ping. It adds a hop, so the nearest server matters more than any other setting. Our gaming VPN guide explains what to expect.
Surfshark for Xbox Through a Router
A router running Surfshark covers the Xbox and every other device on the network. Surfshark’s page calls it one of its two methods, and VPNAlert lists router firmwares that work, including DD-WRT, Tomato, Sabai, Asus and Linksys. Our Surfshark router guide covers the setup, and our router setup guide explains which routers support VPN clients.
Once the router connects to Surfshark, connect the Xbox to its Wi-Fi or plug it in by cable. The console needs no extra settings. The trade-off is that every device on that router shares one location.

Surfshark for Xbox Through a Windows PC
Without a VPN router, a Windows PC can share its Surfshark connection. Surfshark’s page describes two ways: an Ethernet cable from the PC to the Xbox, or a mobile hotspot the Xbox joins over Wi-Fi. VPNAlert reports that Surfshark’s support confirmed the virtual router method works only from Windows.
Install the Surfshark app on the PC and connect to a nearby server. Then open Settings, Network and Internet, Mobile hotspot, and turn it on. On the Xbox, open the network settings and join the PC’s hotspot. For a cable connection, Surfshark’s Windows 11 steps go through Advanced network settings and More network adapter options to share the VPN adapter.

Party Chat and UPnP
VPNAlert notes that connecting an Xbox through Surfshark can cause UPnP problems that affect party chat. On routers with custom firmware such as DD-WRT, OpenWRT or Asus-Merlin, it suggests enabling UPnP in the router, then restarting the router and the Xbox.
Surfshark does not offer port forwarding, VPNAlert adds. Hosting games or strict NAT problems may persist through the VPN. If party chat matters more than the VPN, keep the Xbox on a network outside the tunnel.
Ping and Server Choice
Pick the Surfshark server closest to you, not one near a particular game region. Measure ping in the game with and without the VPN. If the difference is small, keep the setup for protection; if it is large, try another nearby city or leave the Xbox outside the VPN for competitive play.
Our Surfshark speed guide covers the protocol and server checks.

Xbox Cloud Gaming on PC and Phones
Xbox Cloud Gaming also runs in a browser on PCs and phones. There, VPNAlert notes, the Surfshark app runs directly on the device, so no router or hotspot is needed. Connect first, then open the cloud gaming page. Our Surfshark Windows guide covers the desktop app.
Cloud gaming is sensitive to delay, since every button press travels to a data centre and back. Use the nearest server, and drop the VPN if input lag becomes noticeable. Our guide to Surfshark for Gaming covers steady ping, no gaming servers, unlimited devices.
Checking the Connection
After setting up the router or hotspot, confirm the public IP from a phone on the same network with our VPN test page. If it shows a Surfshark address, the Xbox uses the tunnel too. Run the Xbox’s own network test as well, which reports the NAT type and connection quality.
What About Smart DNS?
VPNAlert’s older Xbox guide mentions Surfshark’s Smart DNS. Surfshark closed that service in February 2026, as Security.org notes, so the router and Windows routes are the ones that remain. Our Smart DNS vs VPN page explains what Smart DNS did and did not do.
What Surfshark Costs
On 25 September 2026, the Starter 2-year plan cost $67.23 for the first 27 months. Renewal sits at about $79 a year, according to Security.org and VPNOverview. Surfshark sets no device limit, so the PC, router and Xbox add nothing to the count. Our Surfshark price breakdown covers the plans.

How We Research
This page draws on Surfshark’s Xbox page, VPNAlert’s Surfshark Xbox and xCloud guides, and pricing from Surfshark, Security.org and VPNOverview. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 6 October 2026. Surfshark’s renewal table did not load, so renewal figures come from Security.org and VPNOverview. The main source we relied on is Surfshark’s Xbox page. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
