Hotspot Shield Free (2026): What You Get, What It Costs, What Sources Dispute

Disclosure: VPNFin is reader-supported. If you buy a VPN through links on this page, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This never affects our ratings — here’s our full disclosure.

Hotspot Shield free is one of the few free VPNs with no time limit, and Security.org reports no data cap on desktop. The trade-offs are one location, one device, ads and slower speeds on phones. A second source disagrees on the data cap, so this guide sets out both versions before you install anything.

What Hotspot Shield Free Gives You

According to Security.org, the free plan has no data or speed limit on desktop. You get one virtual location instead of the 125 or more on Premium, and one device. On mobile, the plan caps speed at 2 Mbps, enough for email and browsing but not video. Our page on Hotspot Shield not working covers the fixes in order and why the kill switch needs Hydra.

The plan has no time limit, so it does not expire like a trial. However, it does not include the smart TV apps, and Security.org says the free plan does not officially support streaming or torrenting. Our Netflix VPN guide and torrenting guide cover those uses. Our page on Hotspot Shield’s free trial covers the seven-day Premium trial, the card requirement and cancelling.

The Hotspot Shield Free Data Cap Dispute

Sources disagree here. Security.org, which tested the free plan, reports unlimited data on desktop. Impulsec, by contrast, describes a daily cap of 500 MB in one article and 1 GB in another, with a single US location. We could not confirm either cap from Hotspot Shield itself.

The safest reading is that limits can differ by platform and change over time. Check the app’s own screen after installing, and treat any figure as provisional.

The Privacy Cost of Free

Free plans are paid for somehow, and Hotspot Shield’s is paid for by ads. Security.org shows one ad per 15 minutes of access. It also warns that in-app ads may log the IP addresses of free mobile users for personalised content.

Ownership and audits matter too. Hotspot Shield belongs to Point Wild, which also owns Comparitech, a site that reviews VPNs. Auditors have checked its protocol but not its no-logs policy, and the company sits in the United States. Our VPN ownership map and audit tracker cover both points.

Hotspot Shield Free vs Proton VPN Free

Proton VPN’s free plan is the obvious comparison. It has no data limit either, but no ads, and the Proton Foundation owns it. On the other hand, Proton picks a server for you from about ten countries. Our Proton VPN free plan guide covers its limits.

For a wider list, our free VPN roundup compares other free options. Our free trial guide covers paid VPNs you can test first.

Paid alternatives come next, and they appear in our NordVPN vs Hotspot Shield page. Our Surfshark vs Hotspot Shield and Hotspot Shield vs Mullvad pages add two more. NordVPN and Surfshark share an owner, Nord Security.

When Premium Makes Sense

Hotspot Shield free stops making sense once you need more locations. Premium removes the ads, unlocks every location and covers more devices. Our review found it costs around $7.99 a month on an annual plan and renews at about $95.99 a year. Our renewal price comparison puts that in context. If you only need protection on public Wi-Fi now and then, the free plan may be enough.

Mobile Limits

Security.org notes that the free plan on phones caps speed at about 2 Mbps. That covers browsing and messaging but not much more. The free plan also works on one device at a time and has no smart TV apps. Our page on Hotspot Shield on Android TV covers setup, the free tier and the kill switch.

Ads and Data

Security.org reports one advert per 15 minutes of access on the free plan. It also notes that free mobile users’ IP addresses may be logged by in-app advertising. That is a real privacy cost for a free VPN.

Streaming and Torrenting

Security.org says the free plan does not officially support streaming or torrenting. With one virtual location, against more than 125 on the premium plan, there is little to unblock anyway. We put the two side by side in our Hotspot Shield vs ZoogVPN comparison.

Better Free Options

Proton VPN’s free plan has no data cap. Our free VPN guide compares the options.

Who Owns Hotspot Shield

Hotspot Shield belongs to Point Wild, according to our ownership table. Our audit table notes that its protocol was audited, not its no-logs policy. For a free VPN, that difference matters, since the policy is what protects your browsing history. For a head-to-head, see our Hotspot Shield vs PrivadoVPN comparison.

Our Hotspot Shield review covers the paid plan in full. Free plans change often, so check the current terms before relying on any figure here. Our Hotspot Shield vs hide.me comparison sets the two side by side.

If you need more than the free plan offers, test the premium plan within its refund window before committing. Our review explains what the paid plan adds over the free one. We put the two side by side in our Hotspot Shield vs FastestVPN comparison.

How We Research

This page draws on Security.org’s Hotspot Shield review and free VPN tests, Impulsec’s plan articles and our own Hotspot Shield review. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 5 October 2026. Prices come from our earlier reviews and third-party sources. The main source we relied on is Security.org’s Hotspot Shield review. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.

Hotspot Shield free works for light desktop use and occasional public Wi-Fi. The ads, the single location and the unaudited policy are the price. Check the data cap in the app, since sources disagree.
