CyberGhost IKEv2 (2026): Where It Works and When to Use It

Disclosure: VPNFin is reader-supported. If you buy a VPN through links on this page, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This never affects our ratings — here’s our full disclosure.

CyberGhost IKEv2 is available in the Windows, iPhone and Mac apps. CyberGhost’s Windows support lists it alongside WireGuard and OpenVPN, and Tom’s Guide and Insider Gaming report WireGuard and IKEv2 as the two protocols on iOS and macOS. Netzwelt adds that CyberGhost leads with WireGuard while its servers also support IKEv2. We found no CyberGhost guide for a manual IKEv2 setup; its manual configurations use OpenVPN.

This guide covers where IKEv2 fits, how to switch to it, and when WireGuard or OpenVPN is the better choice.

Where CyberGhost IKEv2 Is Available

On Windows, open the settings and choose IKEv2 under the protocol option, as our CyberGhost Windows guide shows.

On iPhone and Mac, IKEv2 is one of two choices, covered in our CyberGhost iPhone guide and Mac guide.

The Linux app offers WireGuard and OpenVPN, Wizcase notes, so IKEv2 is not the route there. Routers use OpenVPN, as our CyberGhost router guide explains. WizCase belongs to Kape, which also owns CyberGhost, so we weigh its findings alongside independent sources.

CyberGhost IKEv2 availability by platform

Why Choose IKEv2

IKEv2’s MOBIKE extension keeps a session alive when a device switches networks, as our IKEv2 vs WireGuard page explains. That suits phones moving between Wi-Fi and mobile data, and laptops that hop between office and home networks. A connection that would drop and reconnect on WireGuard can carry on with IKEv2.

It is also mature and widely supported, which helps on networks where a newer protocol behaves oddly.

When WireGuard Is Better

WireGuard is CyberGhost’s main protocol, Netzwelt notes, and it was faster than IKEv2 in the 2026 gigabit test Tech Insider reported. For streaming, downloads and gaming on a stable connection, start with WireGuard. Our CyberGhost WireGuard guide covers it.

When OpenVPN Is Better

IKEv2 uses fixed ports that some firewalls block, so it is not the protocol for heavily filtered networks. OpenVPN, available in CyberGhost’s Windows and Linux apps and for manual setups, is the fallback there. VPNAlert adds that CyberGhost’s dedicated IPs work only over OpenVPN, so dedicated IP users need it anyway. Our CyberGhost OpenVPN guide covers it.

Switching Protocols to Fix Problems

CyberGhost’s Windows support lists changing the protocol among its first fixes for connection trouble. If a connection drops repeatedly on a phone, try IKEv2. Slow speeds call for WireGuard. When nothing connects on a strict network, try OpenVPN. Our CyberGhost disconnection guide and speed guide go further.

CyberGhost IKEv2: when to switch and when to switch back

IKEv2 on Public Wi-Fi

Hotel, airport and café networks are where IKEv2’s resilience shows. Phones move between those networks and mobile data constantly, and IKEv2 keeps the session alive through the switch. Turn on CyberGhost’s automatic Wi-Fi protection on iOS, which our iPhone guide covers, so the VPN starts before you sign in to anything. Our public Wi-Fi guide explains the risks.

How Secure Is IKEv2?

IKEv2 is a mature, widely reviewed protocol. Tech Insider notes that IKEv2 through strongSwan already supports post-quantum key exchange, though whether a provider enables it varies. Our post-quantum VPN guide explains the threat. For everyday privacy, the provider’s logging record matters more than the protocol.

Gaming and Streaming on IKEv2

For online games, delay matters more than resilience, and WireGuard was the faster protocol in Tech Insider’s test. Our gaming VPN guide explains why the nearest server matters most. For streaming, the server you choose affects results more than the protocol, so pick CyberGhost’s streaming-optimised servers first and the protocol second.

If a stream buffers on IKEv2, switch to WireGuard on the same server before changing anything else. That isolates the protocol as the cause.

The Kill Switch With IKEv2

BleepingComputer notes CyberGhost’s kill switch is always on in the Mac and iOS apps and on by default on Windows, whatever protocol you choose. CyberInsider found the macOS kill switch unreliable after sleep, so reconnect manually after waking a Mac. Our kill switch guide explains why it matters.

A Quick Rule for CyberGhost IKEv2

Use CyberGhost IKEv2 on a phone or laptop that moves between networks during the day. Use WireGuard when the device sits on one network. Switch to OpenVPN when a network blocks the other two, or when a dedicated IP needs it. That simple rule covers most situations without testing every protocol each time, and you can revisit it after app updates.

Testing the Connection

After switching, check your IP with our VPN test page and compare speeds with WireGuard on the same server. For other providers’ IKEv2, see our NordVPN IKEv2 guide. CyberGhost belongs to Kape Technologies, which also owns ExpressVPN and Private Internet Access.

How We Research

This page draws on CyberGhost’s Windows support article, Tom’s Guide, Insider Gaming, Netzwelt, Wizcase, VPNAlert, BleepingComputer, CyberInsider and Tech Insider’s protocol test, plus our renewal table. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 6 October 2026. Renewal from our renewal table. The main source we relied on is CyberGhost’s Windows support article. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
