Hide.me Review (2026): Nobody Agrees What the Free Tier Gives You

Disclosure: VPNFin is reader-supported. If you buy a VPN through links on this page, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This never affects our ratings — here’s our full disclosure.

We have been recommending hide.me’s free tier on our page about free VPNs since early August, as one of three worth trusting. We had never reviewed it.

Doing that now produced an unexpected problem. Four recent sources describe the free tier four different ways, and one of them contradicts itself on the same page.

Is Hide.me Any Good?

On privacy, yes, and by a clear margin. Malaysian jurisdiction outside every intelligence-sharing arrangement, an independent no-logs audit in 2024, self-managed servers rather than rented ones, and a free tier that asks for no email and no card.

On price it is unusual in a way that matters. The long plan runs around $2.69 a month and reportedly renews at the same rate, in a category where doubling at renewal is the norm.

⚠️ On specifications it is genuinely unclear, and that is the finding rather than a caveat.

What We Could Not Confirm

Worth putting first, because it shapes how much weight the rest deserves.

The free data allowance has four published answers. Reviews from March and April 2026 describe a 10 GB monthly cap. Reviews from May and later describe unlimited data with eight locations and one device. One recent article states unlimited data in its body and a 2 GB monthly cap in its own summary box.

We are not going to pick the flattering version. Our reading is that the free tier changed during 2026 and that older figures are still circulating, but the company’s own current terms are the only thing that settles it.

⚠️ Check the signup page before relying on any number, ours included. If the free tier is the reason you are here, that is a two-minute check that beats every review on the subject.

The server count varies too. Recent sources give 1,900, 2,100 and 2,600 servers across 48 to 50 countries. The differences are large enough to matter and small enough that nobody notices.

The Privacy Case, Which Is Solid

Here the sources agree, which is itself informative.

eVenture Ltd operates it from Labuan, Malaysia, and it has run since 2012 under the same founder. The company sells one product and belongs to no group — unlike the two conglomerates that own most of the market.

Malaysia sits outside the Five, Nine and Fourteen Eyes arrangements and imposes no mandatory data retention.

An independent no-logs audit was completed in 2024, and the service was re-accredited by the VPN Trust Initiative in 2026. Sources name the auditor differently, which we note rather than resolve.

Servers are self-managed rather than rented. No third-party data centre sits between the company and its own hardware, which removes the failure mode that produced NordVPN’s 2018 breach.

⚠️ The audit cadence is thin against the leaders. One modern report is not Mullvad’s decade of them or Proton’s sequence, and an audit is a snapshot of a chosen window rather than a standing guarantee.

The Free Tier, and Why It Is Unusual

Whatever the data limit turns out to be, the design is unlike most free plans.

No email address and no payment card. Only Mullvad, IVPN and AirVPN match that among the providers we cover, and all three are paid-only.

The kill switch is on by default, on the free plan as well as the paid one. Many free tiers disable it deliberately to make the upgrade more attractive — and a kill switch that is off is the most common reason one appears not to work.

The same policy and protocol stack apply to free users. The company monetises by conversion rather than by treating free users as inventory, which is the distinction that separates the safe free tiers from the rest.

⚠️ What the free tier does not include: streaming servers, port forwarding, multihop, the ad blocker, and more than one device. Expect it to be throttled.

The Paid Product

Reviewers describe it as technical, and that cuts both ways.

Protocol choice is wide. WireGuard by default, with OpenVPN, IKEv2 and SSTP available; SoftEther is being retired.

Dynamic port forwarding is included on paid plans. That makes it one of the few options for seeding — our torrenting guide covers why static forwarding is better still, and hide.me’s is the dynamic kind.

Multihop, SOCKS proxy and an application firewall round out a feature set aimed at people who enjoy settings pages.

⚠️ Beginners will find it harder than the mainstream apps. One reviewer put it as rewarding power users while punishing newcomers, and that matches the rest of the coverage.

Price, and the Part Worth Checking

Around $2.69 a month on the 26-month plan, which is at the cheap end of anything with a published audit.

The renewal is reported to stay at the same rate. If accurate, that is close to unique — our renewal table exists because most providers roughly double.

⚠️ One source describes auto-renewals billing higher than the signup promotion, which contradicts the same-price claim. Read the checkout page, and take a screenshot of what it says.

Who It Is For

Buy the paid plan if you want an audited service outside every alliance and you are comfortable with a technical interface.

Use the free tier as the safest free option to try, provided you check the current limit yourself rather than trusting any published figure.

Look elsewhere if streaming is the point. It works on paid plans and not on free, and it is not the strongest in the category either way.

⚠️ And correct our own page while you are at it. Our free VPN guide describes hide.me as having a smaller data allowance than Windscribe. That may no longer be true, and we would rather flag it than quietly leave it.

How We Research

This review draws on TechNadu for the corporate structure, the 2024 audit and the 2026 VPN Trust Initiative accreditation, on VPNTesting and IP-Trackers for the 10 GB free allowance, on VPNRating, TheBestVPN and Work Management for the unlimited-data description of the same tier, on CriticNest for the pricing and the port-forwarding comparison, and on VPNOverview for the corporate history. Where those sources disagree — and on the free tier they disagree completely — we have set the versions side by side rather than choosing one. We do not run our own tests. Our method lives on the About Us page.

Hide.me FAQ

How much data does the hide.me free tier give you?

Published sources disagree completely. Reviews from March and April 2026 describe a 10 GB monthly cap; later ones describe unlimited data with eight locations and one device, and one article states both figures on the same page. Check the signup page rather than any review, including this one.

Is hide.me safe?

The privacy case is strong. It operates from Malaysia, outside the Five, Nine and Fourteen Eyes arrangements and without mandatory data retention, completed an independent no-logs audit in 2024, was re-accredited by the VPN Trust Initiative in 2026, and runs its own servers rather than renting them.

Who owns hide.me?

eVenture Ltd, based in Labuan, Malaysia, founded in 2012 by Sebastian Schaub. It sells one product and belongs to no larger group, which distinguishes it from the brands owned by Kape Technologies and Nord Security.

Does hide.me have port forwarding?

Yes, on paid plans, through the account dashboard. It is dynamic rather than static, meaning the assigned port changes periodically. For torrent clients running continuously, static forwarding from Proton VPN or Private Internet Access is the more predictable option.

Does the price go up at renewal?

Reportedly not, which would make it unusual in this category. One source describes the long plan renewing at the same rate; another describes auto-renewals billing above the signup promotion. Read the checkout page carefully and keep a record of what it states.

Summary

Malaysian jurisdiction outside every alliance, a 2024 no-logs audit, self-managed servers, and a free tier requiring neither an email nor a card. The costs are one modern audit rather than a sequence, an interface aimed at people who enjoy settings, and published specifications that four sources cannot agree on.

Final Verdict

Hide.me is the strongest privacy proposition we have reviewed at this price. Malaysian jurisdiction, a 2024 audit, self-managed hardware, and a free tier that wants neither your email nor your card.

Its weaknesses are thin audit history and an interface that assumes competence. Neither is disqualifying; both are real.

And the free tier remains genuinely uncertain. Four sources, four answers, one of them at war with itself. Check the signup page, because on this specific question nobody writing about it is reliable — including us until the company’s terms say otherwise.
