Disclosure: VPNFin is reader-supported. If you buy a VPN through links on this page, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This never affects our ratings — here’s our full disclosure.
Cancelling a VPN and getting your money back are two different actions. Doing the first and expecting the second is the most common way people lose a subscription fee they were entitled to recover.
And if you bought through an app store, the provider cannot refund you at all. That decision belongs to Apple, Google or Amazon, and the provider will tell you so.
The Two Actions, in Order
Turning off auto-renewal stops the next charge. Your access continues until the period you already paid for runs out. It can be done at any point in the subscription and it returns no money.
Requesting a refund is separate. It is a conversation with support, usually through live chat, and it has to happen inside the guarantee window.
⚠️ Providers do not connect the two. NordVPN states plainly that cancelling stops future charges but leaves your existing payment where it is. Surfshark says the same. Neither will refund you because you cancelled.
So the order is: cancel, then ask. And keep the chat transcript, because it is the only record you will have.

Where You Bought It Decides Who You Ask
Bought on the provider’s own website — the provider refunds you, through live chat or email.
Bought through the Apple App Store, Google Play or Amazon — those platforms refund you. The provider cannot, because the money never reached it directly. NordVPN and Surfshark both say this in their own documentation.
Paid in cryptocurrency — still the provider, but by email rather than live chat.
⚠️ This is not a technicality, and we have seen it play out. When Atlas VPN closed in 2024, subscribers who had paid through Apple could not be migrated to NordVPN for platform reasons. They were refunded by Apple and left without a service, while everyone who had paid directly kept theirs.

What the Guarantee Actually Covers
Your first purchase, within thirty days, for any reason. Every provider we rank offers at least that, with no interrogation and no form to argue with.
CyberGhost gives 45 days on its six-month and longer plans, and Norton gives 60 on annual ones. Those are the two widest windows we track.
⚠️ Renewals are not covered. The guarantee applies to the initial subscription only. Once a term ends and the renewal is charged, NordVPN and Surfshark both treat that payment as non-refundable — which is the charge people most often want back.
ExpressVPN is the exception. Reporting describes a 14-day window after an automatic renewal for customers who did not intend to renew, in addition to the usual thirty days for new subscribers. It is the only such arrangement we have found.
The Suspension Nobody Advertised
Worth recording, because it shows a guarantee is a policy rather than a right.
ExpressVPN suspended its money-back guarantee entirely for subscriptions bought between 10 June and 11 July 2026. Those purchases included entry into a World Cup sweepstakes, and the company’s terms excluded them from refunds.
⚠️ So an entire month’s cohort bought without the protection everyone assumes is standard. The terms said so; almost nobody reads them at checkout.
Read what a promotion changes before taking it. A free month or a prize draw can carry conditions the ordinary price does not — which is the same caution our student discount page reaches by a different route.

Your Statutory Rights Are Separate
In the United Kingdom, online purchases carry a 14-day statutory cancellation right, independent of whatever the provider offers. The European Union has an equivalent.
That is shorter than most guarantees and harder to invoke, so it matters mainly when a provider refuses. It exists as a floor, not as the usual route.
⚠️ We are not lawyers and this is not advice. If a refund is refused and you believe the law entitles you to it, the answer lies with a consumer body in your own country rather than with a review site.
Before You Cancel
Back up anything stored in the bundle. Password managers and encrypted storage sold alongside a VPN lose functionality when the plan downgrades, and NordVPN warns about this explicitly for NordPass and NordLocker.
Check whether the problem is fixable. Streaming failures, slow connections and blocked networks are usually configuration rather than the provider — our pages on DNS leaks and obfuscation cover the two most common causes.
Note the date of your first payment. The window runs from then, not from when you started using it, and not from the renewal.
Decide where you are going. Every provider we rank offers at least thirty days, so testing a replacement costs nothing but the setup time.
How We Research
This guide draws on NordVPN’s and Surfshark’s own cancellation and refund documentation for the separation of the two actions, the app-store rule and the exclusion of renewals, on Security.org for the platform-by-platform cancellation routes, on Gizmodo for the reported processing times and the statutory position in the United Kingdom, and on a published summary citing ExpressVPN’s own terms for the 14-day post-renewal window and the World Cup promotional suspension. We excluded one source that reproduced this material without attribution. Refund windows and processing times come from our own tables. We do not run our own tests. Our method lives on the About Us page.
Cancelling a VPN FAQ
No. Turning off auto-renewal stops the next charge and leaves your existing payment untouched, with access continuing until the paid period ends. A refund is a separate request to support, and it has to happen inside the guarantee window.
Apple, not the provider. The same applies to Google Play and the Amazon Appstore — the money never reached the VPN company directly, so it cannot return it. Both NordVPN and Surfshark state this in their own documentation.
Usually not. Money-back guarantees cover the initial purchase only, and renewals are treated as non-refundable at most providers. ExpressVPN is the exception, with a reported 14-day window after an automatic renewal for customers who did not intend to renew.
NordVPN describes processing within about four hours and up to ten business days to reach your account depending on payment method. Reported figures for Surfshark are three to seven business days. The money returns to whatever you paid with.
Norton at 60 days on annual plans and CyberGhost at 45 days on six-month and longer plans are the widest we track. Most providers offer 30 days, which is enough to test streaming and speed through a full billing cycle.
The Verdict
Cancel first, then ask for the money separately. No provider connects the two actions, and doing only the first is how people end up paying for a service they stopped using.
Check your receipt before you contact anyone. If it came from Apple, Google or Amazon, the provider cannot help you and will say so.
And the window runs from your first payment. The charge most people want refunded — a renewal they forgot about — is the one almost no guarantee covers.
