ExpressVPN vs Hide.me (2026): Two Offshore VPNs, One Independent

Disclosure: VPNFin is reader-supported. If you buy a VPN through links on this page, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This never affects our ratings — here’s our full disclosure.

ExpressVPN and Hide.me both operate from outside the Five, Nine and Fourteen Eyes arrangements: ExpressVPN from the British Virgin Islands, Hide.me from Labuan in Malaysia. On jurisdiction, then, they start level.

The difference is in who owns them and how much outsiders have checked. ExpressVPN belongs to Kape Technologies and lists 28 published security reports. Hide.me belongs to no group, has run under the same founder since 2012, and has an audit from 2024. Hide.me also offers what ExpressVPN does not: a free tier that asks for no email, and port forwarding.

ExpressVPN vs Hide.me: The Short Answer

Choose ExpressVPN for streaming, polish and a long record of verification. It rates 4.5 in our ExpressVPN review and runs every server from RAM.

Choose Hide.me for independence, a private free tier, or port forwarding. It rates 3.6 in our Hide.me review and costs around $2.69 a month on its 26-month plan.

On price, Hide.me is far cheaper, and reports say its renewal stays flat, while ExpressVPN Basic renews at $99.95 a year.

Privacy: Same Starting Point, Different Evidence

ExpressVPN lists 28 published third-party security reports, including three no-logs assessments by KPMG, and its TrustedServer system wipes each server on reboot. In 2017 Turkish authorities seized one of its servers and recovered no usable data.

Hide.me has one modern audit, from 2024, and the VPN Trust Initiative re-accredited it in 2026. Sources name the auditor as Securitum or Altius IT. Its servers are self-managed rather than rented, which removes the risk of a hosting company stepping between it and its hardware.

⚠️ Ownership is the real difference. Kape Technologies also owns CyberGhost and PIA, and our ExpressVPN review discusses its earlier history. Hide.me’s eVenture Ltd sells one product. Our ownership guide and our audit tracker cover both.

ExpressVPN against Hide.me on privacy: jurisdiction, ownership, published reports and server design

Price

ExpressVPN Basic costs $83.72 for 28 months on the current offer, then $99.95 a year. Our ExpressVPN pricing page explains why its 80% discount is measured against the monthly price.

Hide.me costs around $2.69 a month on its 26-month plan. Its renewal is reported to stay at that rate, though one source describes auto-renewals billing higher, so read the checkout page and keep a copy. Our renewal price table shows why a flat renewal would be unusual.

The Free Tier

Hide.me’s free plan asks for no email and no card, and its kill switch is on by default. Its data limit is disputed across published sources, from a 10 GB cap to unlimited, so check the signup page. ExpressVPN has no free plan; its app-store listings offer a seven-day trial instead. Our free VPN guide compares the free tiers worth trusting, and our free trial guide the trials.

Features and Everyday Use

Streaming: ExpressVPN worked with the major Netflix libraries in every 2026 test we found, as our ExpressVPN and Netflix page records. Hide.me streams on paid plans only and is not the strongest in the category.

Port forwarding: Hide.me includes dynamic port forwarding on paid plans; ExpressVPN offers none on its VPN servers. Our port forwarding guide explains why that matters for seeding.

Devices and platforms: ExpressVPN allows 10 to 14 devices by tier and runs on both Fire TV systems, as our Fire Stick guide explains.

Ease of use: ExpressVPN’s apps are among its strengths. Hide.me is technical, with wide protocol choice and multihop, and suits people who enjoy settings.

What Each One Lacks

ExpressVPN lacks a free plan, port forwarding and a low renewal. Basic renews at $99.95 a year, and its parent company’s history is a point some buyers weigh against it.

Hide.me lacks depth of verification and polish. A single audit from 2024 is a snapshot, its streaming is weaker, and its interface suits people who like settings. Its published specifications, from server counts to the free data limit, also vary between sources.

Both share the offshore base, which is why this comparison turns on evidence, ownership and features rather than on jurisdiction. Our no-logs guide explains how to weigh those.

Which One

ExpressVPN for streaming, polished apps and extensive published verification, if you will pay its renewal.

Hide.me for an independent provider, a free tier with no email, port forwarding and a low price, if a technical interface does not put you off. NordVPN against Hide.me and Surfshark against Hide.me, two Nord Security brands against it, cover the alternatives.

Which to choose: ExpressVPN for streaming, polish and verification; Hide.me for independence, a free tier and port forwarding

How We Research

ExpressVPN’s current price comes from its pricing page, read on 25 September 2026, and its reports, TrustedServer design, seizure and devices from our ExpressVPN review and tables. Hide.me’s audit, ownership, free-tier dispute, price and features come from our Hide.me review, which names its sources. We do not run our own tests. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
