Platforms and Features
Norton’s split tunnelling runs only on Windows and Android, and Tom’s Guide found no WireGuard or OpenVPN on Mac, and our split tunnelling guide explains why that matters. Norton also does not support Chromebooks. Surfshark offers WireGuard across its apps, as our Surfshark Mac guide shows.
Norton has strengths of its own: Mimic stealth, Double VPN, IP rotation and P2P servers, according to PCWorld. Our obfuscation guide explains what a stealth protocol does, and our torrenting guide covers P2P use.
Bundles and Ownership
In Surfshark vs NortonVPN, both sell security bundles. Surfshark One adds antivirus, while Norton 360 wraps the VPN into Norton’s antivirus suite. Our VPN vs antivirus page explains how the two jobs differ.
Ownership differs. Surfshark belongs to Nord Security, which also owns NordVPN, and operates from the Netherlands. Norton belongs to Gen Digital in the US, and Security.org notes its policy allows sharing data within Gen Digital. Our VPN ownership map shows both groups.

Trials and Refunds
Norton has no free trial, according to Security.org. Surfshark offers a 30-day refund and a 7-day trial on some plans, as our Surfshark trial guide and Surfshark refund guide explain. Our Norton VPN review covers Norton’s terms.

Ownership and Data Sharing
Norton VPN belongs to Gen Digital, which also owns Avast, Avira, AVG, CCleaner and LifeLock, according to Tom’s Guide and Experte. Security.org notes that Norton’s privacy policy allows data sharing with partners inside Gen Digital.
Surfshark belongs to Nord Security, which also owns NordVPN. Both groups are large. The difference is that Norton sits inside a wider consumer software family, so read its privacy policy with that in mind.
Protocols and Platforms

Surfshark offers WireGuard across its main apps and a Linux app, as our Surfshark Linux guide shows. It also supports Chromebooks through its Android app, as our Surfshark Chromebook guide explains.
Audits
Tom’s Guide reports that Norton published its second no-logs audit in October 2025, and that Mimic passed its first third-party audit in December 2025. Our audit table counts two Deloitte audits for Surfshark. Both now have independent checks, which older reviews of Norton missed.
Trials and Testing
Security.org notes Norton has no free trial. Surfshark offers a 7-day trial with a card and a 30-day refund window. Either way, test on your own devices and services before committing to a two-year plan. Our Surfshark refund guide explains the process.
Which One Fits
Norton suits people who already use Norton security software and want one account for everything. Its Standard plan covers five devices, according to Security.org. Surfshark suits households with many devices, since it sets no limit, and people who use Linux or Chromebooks. Both renew at similar prices, so the choice comes down to devices, platforms and how much you trust each owner with your data.
Whichever you choose, check the renewal price at checkout. Security.org lists Norton Standard at $79.99 a year on renewal, close to Surfshark’s renewal, so first-term discounts decide more than renewal does. Our Norton VPN review and Surfshark review cover each service in full.
How We Research
This page draws on Norton VPN reviews from Tom’s Guide, Security.org, PCWorld and Experte, plus the provider pricing pages behind our own reviews. We cross-checked these sources against each other, and where they conflict or something can’t be verified, we say so in the text rather than guessing. We checked time-sensitive figures, including prices in US dollars, on 5 October 2026. NordVPN and Surfshark prices come from their pages on 25 September 2026; Norton’s from Security.org. The main source we relied on is Security.org’s Norton VPN review. Our full approach lives on the About Us page.
